Install Docker 17.04 Stable version on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

 

Get Docker for Ubuntu-18.04

Step 1-: Update the apt package index

sudo apt update

Step 2-: Upgrade the apt packages

sudo apt -y upgrade 

Step 3-: Install packages to allow apt to use a repository over HTTPS

sudo apt install -y docker.io apt-transport-https ca-certificates curl software-properties-common

Step 4-: Add the current user into the docker group

sudo usermod -aG docker $USER

Step 5-: Refresh the current terminal session

newgrp docker

Note-: If you will not run the above command you will get the error as below

Got permission denied while trying to connect to the Docker daemon socket at unix:///var/run/docker.sock: Get http://%2Fvar%2Frun%2Fdocker.sock/v1.35/images/json: dial unix /var/run/docker.sock: connect: permission denied

To test the docker

docker run -it hello-world

All docker container list

$ docker ps -a

  1. Thanks for the post, the line “newgrp docker” did it for me ! Be careful, there is a typo there : it’s not “dokcer”, it’s “docker”
